Adem’s Top 50 Albums of 2013

Australian based blog "Schizophonic" have just announced their Top 50 Albums of 2013, compiled by Adem. We are thrilled to announce that the list includes not one, but two projects by John von Ahlen!

Click here to read the full article >> http://schizophonic.org/2013/12/27/adems-top-50-albums-of-2013/

Here are the highlights :

13. Parralox “RECOVERY”
Not usually one for cover albums (however, there is still one more of those yet to appear in this countdown), in 2013 Australia’s own Parralox proved that a covers collection wasn’t something that had to be boring. Their exquisite take on Parson’s “Eye In The Sky” is as wonderful as their covers of Madonna’s “Physical Attraction” and ABBA’s “The Day Before You Came”. Nonetheless it’s Front 242′s “Headhunter” which takes the cake as the best cover here, banging away in just over six minutes of dance-floor perfection that stands as an even bigger track than the 1988 original. Parralox have always been a massive favourite of mine and this could be their finest produced record to date. With a new vocalist set to join the group for 2014 and original releases planned in the foreseeable future, there’s no doubt in my mind this next album will exceed all expectations.
KEY TRACKS: “Headhunter”, “Physical Attraction”, “Eye In The Sky”.

24. The Sound Of The Crowd “LIFE IS CALLING”
This pure electro side-project from Parralox genius and Melbourne’s very own John von Ahlen, under the guise of The Sound of the Crowd, is a rather astonishing debut. There’s a Stock/Aitken/Waterman throwback on the icy “Companion”, which sounds like it could have slotted onto the end of Mel & Kim’s first album F.L.M. quite comfortably, yet as a whole the record is a lot more underground than what we’ve come to expect from Parralox. Keep an ear out for Nic Toupee, an absolute living legend who is also one of my all-time favourite Melbourne DJs, who lends vocals to the big finale “Conclusion”, which is my choice-cut selection from Life Is Calling.

KEY TRACKS: “Conclusion”, “Wildlife”, “Companion”.

Perez Hilton & Eye In The Sky

Perez Hilton has just done a full write up on our new song "Eye In The Sky".

"It's been almost five years since we last posted a song from Australian group Parralox.
We are so happy that they're back and sounding sweet as ever!
Their new song, Eye In The Sky, sounds like an Abba written for a TV theme filtered with 80s synths.
It's kinda magical!!!!!!!

Eye In The Sky - New EP out now!

"Eye In The Sky" by Parralox marks a new era for the Melbourne based electronic pop act who are moving in excitingly new brighter directions after the release of their re-interpeted electronic pop classics album "Recovery".

Having received elevated acclaim in US club culture and in the pop music blogoshpere by MTV Buzzworthy, Elektro Magazine and Arjan Writes with their collaboration with Ryan Adames on "Silent Morning", it's evident that the Parralox sound continues to resonate deeply into the fabric of the popular music landscape.
For fans of rhythm-driven soft rock, "Eye in the Sky" will be a familiar tune as it was originally recorded by The Alan Parsons Project in 1982.

Some might think a melancholic soft-rock track from the 80's wouldn't be the first choice for Parralox to cover, but with the song's haunting and serene overtures, Parralox were determined to breathe a new life into the song marking their change of direction in 2014. For the first time, Parralox producer John von Ahlen takes on lead vocals for "Eye In The Sky", a first for Parralox in this new era of their music.

The music video for "Eye In The Sky" is a collaboration between John Ibrahm and John von Ahlen. After endless cups of coffee and many late nights in John's Melbourne studio, a vision for the clip started to slowly emerge. Rather than rely on CGI and special effects it was decided to construct a practical mirror box set piece to achieve the optical illusion of infinite reflections in the music video.

Fashion model Rowena Kang co-stars in the video to add an otherworldy vibe to the clip, with some scenes reminiscent of Japanese horror movie "The Ring". Rowena's unique and striking presence brings a whole new element to the Parralox clip and you'll be able to see why she has already been headhunted by the major fashion houses in Paris.
Decidedly claustrophobic, the "Eye In The Sky" video captures the essence of reflection, observation and introspection.

Parralox will also be doing an intimate show on February 7th, 2014 for EQ Live at The Workshop in London's fashionable Shoreditch area where new female, London-based vocalist Johanna Gervin (The Ultrasonics / X-Factor) will make her Parralox debut singing classic Parralox tracks along with new material from the band's next album "Subculture".

The "Eye In The Sky" digital EP by Parralox is out now worldwide on all leading online retailers including iTunes and Amazon. The EP features new remixes from the "Recovery" album and many new b-sides with a physical EP coming out on Conzoom Records January 2014 for Parralox's loyal international fan base.

Unreleased Human League song "You're My Baby"

DRUMSET MYSTERY
"Onstage there was no drumset at all , but you can perfectly hear it!!!"

Wind the clock back to 1982.
The Human League are on top of the world, basking in the success of their seminal album "Dare" which they perform live across the world. People bought cassettes, vinyl records and listened to the radio. Mp3, CD and internet were in the distant future.
As The Human League performed "Don't You Wan't Me" to the enthralled masses, they would sometimes start their live performance with a song called "You're My Baby".
Mystery has shrouded this track for decades. Information was non existent. There were rumours that the track was originally performed by the Motown girl-group "The Shirelles".
The only place you could hear "Youre My Baby", apart from being at a concert, was on vinyl bootlegs. The most notable bootlegs being "Drumset Mystery" and "Boiling Point".

"Drumset Mystery" - The Human League (Bootleg)

Fast forward to 2013.
Ian Burden (bass guitarist for the The Human League, co-writer of Love Action/The Sound Of The Crowd etc)) is now friends with John von Ahlen (Parralox/The Tenth Stage/The Sound Of The Crowd) and has contributed bass guitar to each of these projects.

It all began with a conversation between John and Ian Burden about "You're My Baby", in which Ian spoke about touring with the band in the 80's and the origin of the song. It's revealed that the song is written by one Mr I. Elliot, a relative of one of the members of the Comsat Angels. Connections are made and Mr Elliot is contacted and gives his blessings for the track to be recorded.

Parralox release their 5th album "Recovery" which is all cover versions, and one of the tracks recorded in the studio sessions was "You're My Baby". Ian Burden enters the studio and performs bass guitar, in addition to some keyboard parts for the new Parralox recording of "You're My Baby" and the rest is history.

Special thanks to Ian Burden and Mr I. Elliot.

"You're My Baby" appears on the new Parralox EP "Eye In The Sky" out on 11-12-13
It will also be available on a Limited Edition CD from conzoom Records in December 2013.

Listen to "You're My Baby" by playing the YouTube video above, or clicking here.

Parralox could use a clone or two....

Aural Addiction have interviewed John von Ahlen, producer of Parralox.

Here's an excerpt:
Which other genres of music would you like to try? Which ones would you like to avoid, if any?
In my recording career I’ve covered most styles, but at the moment I’m looking to explore a more acoustic/folky/electronica sound, which I’m doing in my side project “The Sound Of The Crowd”.
I also have an itch to produce some R&B, more along the vein of Afrika Bambaataa v/s Kraftwerk v/s Roxanne Shante v/s Missy Elliot.
Some electro R&B is so pure it drives me crazy, especially with a kick ass rapper over the top. Actually, I do have my eye on a rapper in the UK. I’ve asked management to reach out to her, so we’ll see what happens.
To be perfectly honest though, I wish I could clone myself and work 24 hours a day 7 days a week because there are really so many styles I want to explore.
If I had to pick one to avoid, it would be heavy metal/death metal. I’ve done enough of that in my time. I love bands like Tool / Muse but I don’t think you could consider them heavy metal. I don’t anyway.
And I love Ozzy Osbourne, so go figure!

Babysue reviews Recovery

Babysue website has reviewed Recovery, our 5th studio album.

Here's the review:
If you loved the keyboard driven techno sounds of dance bands from the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s...chances are the folks in Parralox are gonna knock your socks off. The band is the project created by Australian producer John von Ahlen. This album also includes the vocal talents of Roxy, Ryan Adames, Amii Jackson, and von Ahlen himself. Parralox is already a favorite among lots of music fans around the planet. And after spinning this album we can certainly see why. These groove-oriented tracks absolutely command movement. The songs feature solid 4/4 rhythms with perpetual beats and nice big meaty keyboard sounds. There's a lot to chomp into here...fourteen intoxicating cuts that'll have folks on dance floors around the world sweating up a storm. Our favorite tracks include "In The Night", "Headhunter", "Physical Attraction", and "A Little Respect". This package also includes a nifty art booklet that is just too cool for words.

Documentary Evidence (Unofficial Mute Records website) reviews Recovery

Documentary Evidence (the unofficial Mute Records website) reviews the latest Parralox album.
Here's an extract >>

"Recovery, the fifth album from John von Ahlen's Parralox is a collection of cover versions of tracks by Depeche Mode, Madonna, Blancmange, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys and others, all delivered with the highest possible pop nous by this Australian producer. Initially reticent about the idea of delivering an album of other people's songs, most of the tracks that form Recovery languished, unused, for two years until von Ahlen finally decided that the risk of offering alternative interpretations of some absolutely classic songs was worth it. The result is an album that entirely restores your faith in what pop music can be."

Depeche Mode - Fantasy Album

What if Depeche Mode had only made one album this century?
TEC asked John von Ahlen (Parralox) and other contributors and friends to choose their favourite DM song of the 21st century for inclusion on a fantasy album, ‘Exciting The Angel Of The Universe’ perhaps?

The album tracklist is on the clickable link below, together with each contributor’s reasons for their choice. This is a fine collection of songs, and it shows that 21st century DM can still produce moments of magic. But together do they make a great DEPECHE MODE album? See what you think…

The Back Building interviews Parralox

Parralox: Their Hair Is Full Of Secrets

"Ever wish Dragonette would take less time between albums? Or that The Human League would reunite with some material that was actually worth their while? If the answer is ‘YES’ then fear not as we have the solution - Parralox!
Comprised of Aussie duo, Ami and John, the pair are succeeding in making electropop sound fresh again after David Guetta and Calvin Harris totally homogenised it over the last few years.
We catch up with John to discuss Divine, Twin Peak’s Laura Palmer and Rossy De Palma’s nose.
